FDA’s Pazdur Discusses Medication Approval Process.

Forbes (6/24, 928K) profiles FDA Office of Oncology and Hematology Products Director Dr. Richard Pazdur, who exemplifies the “tension between the need to get new drugs to patients fast and the competing desire to make sure they are safe and effective first.” Critics view him as a “compassionless bureaucrat who denies cancer patients lifesaving medicines using red tape and fine print.” But during an interview at the annual American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting earlier this month, Dr. Pazdur, citing what he sees as “a revolution” in tumor treatments, came across as “anything but an obstructionist.” Notably, seven of the 13 medications approved by the FDA since January, are cancer therapies.
